Cephalopod Vision Workshop – 10 October 2014 – Napoli, Italy

CephsInAction will create opportunities to mix ‘special scientific events’ dedicated to different topics on basic and applied biology, with FA1301 COST Action WGs meetings. These will be a sort of satellite events to meetings planned to occur in the workplan of our Action.

The ‘Cephalopod Vision Workshop’ marks the October 2014 CephsInAction@Naples meeting

We share much physiology in common, but our eyes and brains have evolved independently from an ancestor that surely had no more than rudimentary photosensitive eye-spots.
Have developmental processes, the physics of light and the need to interpret and respond to the visual world led to similarities to vertebrates? What can we learn from the striking differences between cephalopods and vertebrates, in their life-histories, and their control of movement and appearance?

Research on vision and visual behaviour of cephalopods is flourishing, and this meeting gives us an opportunity to discuss our recent work, and future plans.

Stavros Hadjisolomou, USA

– Development of visually guided behavior in the cuttlefish
A.-S. Darmaillacq and L. Dickel, France
